Tax Deductions for Professional Development

Investing in your professional skills can also be an investment in tax savings. Here's what qualifies as deductible professional development.

Professional Development Tax Deductions

For Self-Employed and Business Owners

All ordinary and necessary professional development expenses are deductible:

Qualifying expenses:

  • Industry conferences and seminars
  • Online courses and subscriptions (Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, etc.)
  • Professional books and journals
  • Certification exam fees
  • Training programs
  • Professional coaching
  • Workshops and webinars

Key requirement: Must be related to your current field — not for learning a new career.

For W-2 Employees

Under TCJA (2018–2025), employees generally cannot deduct unreimbursed professional development expenses.

Exceptions:

  • Armed Forces reservists
  • Qualified performing artists
  • Fee-based government officials
  • Teachers (up to $300 for classroom supplies)

Employer Education Assistance

If your employer provides education assistance:

  • Up to $5,250/year is tax-free to you
  • Employer gets a deduction

Work-Related Education as a Business

If you're self-employed and your education qualifies, create a "training" category in your books and deduct the cost.

Self-employed and investing in your skills? Make sure you're deducting every educational expense.
