Tax Deductions for Teachers and Educators
Teachers spend their own money on classrooms every year. Here are the tax deductions educators can claim to recover some of those out-of-pocket costs.
Tax Deductions for Teachers and Educators
Educator Expense Deduction
K–12 teachers, instructors, principals, and counselors can deduct up to $300 per year ($600 if married filing jointly, both are educators) for out-of-pocket classroom expenses.
This is an above-the-line deduction — available even if you take the standard deduction.
Qualifying expenses:
- Books and classroom supplies
- Computer and software used in the classroom
- Professional development courses
- Athletic supplies for physical education teachers
- COVID-19 protective items
Home Office Deduction
If you work from home (hybrid teaching) and have a dedicated space, you may qualify — but only if self-employed (adjunct professors, tutors).
Professional Development
Job-related education expenses may be deductible if they maintain or improve skills required in your current job.
Union Dues
Prior to TCJA, union dues were deductible. Currently they are NOT deductible for W-2 employees through 2025.
Student Loan Interest
Many teachers qualify for the student loan interest deduction — up to $2,500 per year.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness
After 5 years of teaching in a low-income school, up to $17,500 in student loans may be forgiven — and it's generally tax-free.
