How to Choose the Right Filing Status
Your filing status significantly impacts your tax rate and standard deduction. Learn which status maximizes your refund.
How to Choose the Right Filing Status
Your filing status is one of the most important factors in determining your tax liability.
The Five Filing Statuses
1. Single
For unmarried individuals or those legally separated as of December 31.
2. Married Filing Jointly (MFJ)
Most beneficial for most married couples. Combines both spouses' income and deductions.
3. Married Filing Separately (MFS)
Sometimes beneficial when one spouse has high medical expenses or miscellaneous deductions.
4. Head of Household (HOH)
For unmarried individuals who paid more than half the cost of a home for a qualifying person.
- Standard deduction is higher than Single
- Lower tax rates than Single
5. Qualifying Surviving Spouse
For widows/widowers with a dependent child for two years after spouse's death.
Which Status Is Best for You?
- Married couples should generally compare MFJ vs MFS each year
- Single parents often qualify for HOH status, which is more favorable
- Divorced parents: only the custodial parent typically qualifies for HOH
